Firehawk Aerospace is a propulsion-focused aerospace and defense company based in the Dallas, TX area. Firehawk is seeking a propulsion test engineer, whose primary responsibilities would include designing and operating rocket engine test stands for our Hybrid Engines and Solid Rocket Motors. Test engineers work in partnership with experienced operations and ground systems engineers and technicians to build and modify test facilities, as well as participate in test campaigns to test our hardware. You will be directly engaged in daily test operations, maintenance, and construction activities in the field. The role may include aspects of both designing ground systems and conducting test operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Create, modify, and optimize test sequences, procedures, and data review processes
- Conduct propulsion test operations to assess performance of rocket engines and motors
- Directly control and receive telemetry from the test stand and test articles through GUIs and an integrated software suite for control, automation, and data visualization
- Help develop new rocket engine propulsion designs based on real test data
- Perform system-level troubleshooting and maintenance of test stand equipment and hardware
- Identify root cause of system faults and implement corrective actions.
- Potentially travel to horizontal test and launch locations, up to 25%
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related field
- Prior experience in aerospace is not required
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and plumbing and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID)
- Basic understanding of the operation of sensor types used to measure temperature, pressure, flow, and displacement
- Hands-on fabrication experience using common power tools for projects at work/home/school
- Strong work ethic and ability to thrive in a fast-paced R&D environment
- Self-motivated with strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills
- Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships
- Valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in aerospace or related field
- Demonstrated drive to deliver on tight schedules, especially when unconventional & creative solutions are necessary
- Proficiency in 3D modeling and drafting, including GD&T
- Hands-on experience with metalworking, welding, hydraulics, manufacturing, etc.
- Working knowledge of fluid components such as valves, regulators, and instrumentation
- Ability to understand and develop fluid P&IDs (Plumbing and Instrumentation Diagrams) for large-scale test stands and supporting ground equipment
- Experience safely operating complex fluid systems, including high pressure gas, cryogenic fluids, flammables, and hydraulics
- Experience in data acquisition, control systems, and instrumentation
- Basic understanding of the operation of sensor types used to measure temperature, pressure, flow, and displacement
- Active or Previous Security Clearance
ITAR Requirements:
To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
Employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit and to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 25 pounds; may require minimal walking, standing for extended amounts of time, climbing, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
Security Clearance:
May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level. Requires U.S. Citizenship. Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.
